Why work for us?

Our history

Trustpower was formed in 1994 following the introduction of the Energy Companies Act 1992, but our roots stretch back over 100 years to the formation of Tauranga’s municipal electricity department in 1914. We’ve grown a lot since then, to become one of the biggest companies on the NZX, providing 8% of New Zealand’s hydro generation capacity from our 25 hydro-electric power schemes, and building our own retail and wholesale telecommunications network.

So that’s our story so far, but it’s not where it ends… Are you ready to join us on the journey?

Our locations

Based in the sunny Bay of Plenty, where you can wake up for a swim, surf, or run on the beach before work, why would you want to be anywhere else? But fear not if the bay is not your thing, our second biggest office is in the gorgeous ‘whitestone city’ and New Zealand’s steampunk capital, Oamaru!

Add to that our generation sites and support offices in some of Aotearoa’s most picturesque locations from Northland to Otago, we’re certain we’ve got a place for you to fit right in.

Our Offices

Our Tauranga HQ is based around the concept of Activity Based Working (ABW), so you won’t be tied to a desk at Trustpower! ABW encourages flexibility and collaboration, which means you can pick the space that works best for you in our open plan, purpose-built office.

Trustpower has had operations based in Oamaru since our purchase of the Call South business in 2007, and our long-term commitment as an employer in the North Otago region has been confirmed with our brand new office that is under construction, due to open in mid-2021! The new office is being purpose-built for Trustpower, and will include ABW-style spaces that will give our Oamaru team the opportunity to experience the full benefits of this flexible style of working.

Our Values

The world is facing an uncertain future, and the way Trustpower moves into the future will require adaptability and speed to make sure we are positioned well to continue to succeed. While strategic focuses or business opportunities may change, the thing that is always a constant is driving decisions from our values, calling upon our embedded values to make the changes we need and holding on to our values to come out the other side still us. Going where no person has been before!

Our Apollo Programme is all about giving our next generation of employees the opportunity to gain cross-functional insight, identify opportunities for us to improve, and develop our overall leadership and technical capability. It's about developing and supporting change agents who will challenge us and shape our future

Apollo has two streams:

  1. Generalist stream - participants rotate throughout various teams and departments over a two year period.  Generalists can be graduates or non-graduates - they just have to be 100% committed and go-getters! 

  2. Technical stream - this programme gives participants the opportunity to focus on developing their technical skills at the same time as developing a broader understanding of how their department(s) operates. It also includes rotations throughout one or two departments over a two year period. This stream is open to Graduates only. 

All participants are permanent employees and at the end of the programme they can apply for a role anywhere in the business.

To further support our emerging talent, we also have a Young Professionals network. YoPros offers all of our young professionals the opportunity to get to know each other, learn from internal or external speakers, connect and collaborate at events throughout the year.
