You’ll find one of New Zealand’s best stretches of accessible white water on the Wairoa River, above State Highway 29. Access to the river is open to everyone, free of charge.
Please note, the river is grade five - exceedingly difficult with long and violent rapids. Safety on the water is your own responsibility, so suitable skills and preparation is vital. If in doubt, contact the Kaimai Canoe Club.
Wairoa River Recreational Water Releases
Trustpower has agreed with the Kaimai Canoe Club, that due to ongoing Goverment requirements relating to COVID-19 at this time, recreational water releases will be reconsidered in September 2020.
Release dates for September onward will be posted to this website closer to the time.
For further information, please contact the Kaimai Canoe Club.
Water may still be released from McLaren Falls Dam at any time as part of normal functions of hydro-electric power generation.
All safety notices, warning signs and sirens still apply to users of the area downstream of the dam. Please continue to follow these at all times.
