Volunteers are on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to help water users navigate a challenging bar. This group empowers people to take charge of their own safety through education, and man round-the-clock rescue operations for those who get into trouble at sea.

KaiMatariki Trust

Supreme Winner, Far North District

KaiMatariki Trust has gained an international reputation as a leader in the preservation and celebration of indigenous culture through its focus on traditional Maori games and customs.

Over the past year, the group has participated in a number of events that have provided development opportunities for its members and cemented its place as a sought-after group amongst indigenous groups internationally. Last July, KaiMatariki Trust represented New Zealand at the second annual World Indigenous Games, hosted by the Enoch Cree Nation in Canada. KaiMatariki Trust has been invited to host the next bi-annual event in New Zealand. Other achievements over the past year include attending an international kite flying festival in Italy, hosting First Nations Cree for Waitangi Day celebrations, and teaching Maori games at Leiden University in The Netherlands.

Adventure Wairoa

Supreme Winner, Wairoa District

 Adventure Wairoa was formed in 2015 out of a desire to create a hub for minority sporting codes in the community. The focus is currently on mountain biking, cycling and waka ama – all of which are growing in popularity thanks to the work of our code champions - tireless volunteers sharing their passion. They have since developed and built Wairoa’s very first mountain bike park, now available to the Wairoa community and tourists free of charge.

Palmerston North Search and Rescue is a group entirely made up of dedicated volunteers offering their specialist search and rescue skills to the community 24/7. They volunteer their time to not only conduct search and rescue operations, but also to maintain their training and promote safe practices.

Dannevirke Cave Dwellers

The Dannevirke Cave Dwellers are a group of volunteers who run The Fantasy Cave. The Fantasy Cave is a destination in Dannevirke that consists of four levels of displays including children stories, nursery rhymes and a model railway depicting local scenery, commencing at the Ashhurst end of the Gorge through to Ormondville.

Alzheimer’s South Canterbury has been making a difference to the lives of those affected by dementia for over 25 years. They provide a range of social work, support and education to the people and families in their region that are affected by dementia. However alongside the amazing contribution of community spirit and volunteers, their most recent biggest achievement has been the raising of funds to establish the park centre.

The Whalan Lodge Trust

When Kurow’s only rest home was no longer financially viable and preparing to shut its doors, a public meeting was held to gauge support -if any, from the community. Unanimous support was pledged both vocally and monetarily. This was the beginning of the voluntary support which has enabled the Whalan Trust (who took over) to build slowly back to present, where they now have thirteen residents and a healthy waiting list.

Inspiring Youth Theatre Charitable Trust

Volunteers raised over $90,000 towards the building of a new hospice by organising and hosting ‘Dancing for a Cause – Nelson Hospice’ – a “Dancing with the Stars” style event where eight local personalities paired with professional dancers to entertain a sell-out audience at the Trafalgar Centre.


Beyond the Bridge Riwaka

This group’s resourcefulness was put to the test when ex Cyclone Gita struck Riwaka. Beyond the Bridge rose to the challenge, mobilising five committee members and coordinating 15 volunteers who worked around the clock to do whatever was needed to feed and shelter families and get them back into their homes.
