Originally from Tonga, Pearlina fully understands the effects of poverty and this has led her down a pathway of helping others.
An impressive student from John Paul College with a record of service to school and community was tonight recognised through the Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award. Pearlina Taliauli has been named as the winner of the Award which is run in conjunction with the Trustpower Rotorua Lakes Community Awards.
The Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award celebrates the work young people do to enrich their community and is jointly run by Trustpower and the Rotorua Lakes Council. Local high schools were asked to recommend one student to be considered for the Award and the runner-up is Jessica Gordon of Rotorua Lakes High School and finalists are Ashleigh Whitmore of Western Heights High School, Victoria Thompson of Rotorua Girls’ High School and Cody Broad of Rotorua Boys' High School.
Trustpower Community Relations Representative Jess Somerville says Pearlina’s nomination spoke volumes about a young lady who cares deeply for those around her and within the Rotorua community.
“The Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award is a great opportunity for a generous student with a big heart to be formally acknowledged and congratulated. It enables us to recognise rather special students like Pearlina, who despite a busy school life choose to dedicate much of their free time to benefiting others.
“From belonging to service groups like Social Justice to helping students with homework to umpiring and coaching a netball team Pearlina dedicatees big hours to such causes every week. Over the years she has also helped with the Sunset Primary Breakfast Club.
“As a coach, mentor and determined fundraiser she is a very deserving Winner of this Award and it is an absolute pleasure to highlight some of her achievements here tonight,” says Miss Somerville.
The Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award was presented at the Trustpower Rotorua Lakes Community Awards, being held at the Energy Events Centre on Monday 15 June.
