The Awards were announced and presented tonight Tuesday 12 August at a function at the Regent Theatre.

For winning the Supreme Award, The West Coast Volunteer Fire Brigade received a framed certificate, a trophy and $1,500 prize money. The West Coast Volunteer Fire Brigade now has the opportunity to represent the district at the 2014 Trustpower National Community Awards, which are being held in the Wellington region in March 2015.

In total, Trustpower has given away over $5,000 to various community groups through tonight’s Awards.

Trustpower Community Relations Representative Emily Beaton says The West Coast Volunteer Fire Brigade “Went above and beyond for their community in a time of need.

The nature of the emergencies that these volunteers attend is as varied as the people who call for them. Their vision is to work with their communities to protect what they value and on the 17th of April this year these volunteers were put to the challenge when the West Coast was faced with the effects of a wind storm from the tail of Cyclone Ita. Winds’ over 140km an hour caused destruction to infrastructure, property and vegetation from Karamea to Haast.

During the storm and the days after, these volunteers played a key response role to their communities and during this period they attended approximately 512 calls.

We can’t wait for these volunteers to share their story with the rest of the country at the 2014 National Community Awards,” says Miss Beaton.
