On July 31st, 2012 TrustPower issued Notice to Proceed (NTP) to the main contractors for the Snowtown 2 Wind Farm Project. The main contractors are Siemens Ltd for the wind farm construction, Downer EDI for the construction of a 275kV transmission line and ElectraNet Pty Ltd for the transmission connection into the existing Para to Bungama line.

SWF-2 will have an installed capacity of 270MW, utilising 10 x Siemens SWT-3.0-101 and 80 x Siemens SWT-3.0-108 wind turbines. The turbines will be placed adjacent to the existing Stage 1 turbines on the Barunga Ranges in the north and in a new development area along the Hummocks Range to the south. The turbines will be connected via an electrical and communications network back to a substation located at Barunga Gap. Adjacent to the substation there will also be a permanent site office and operations and maintenance facility. The electricity will be conveyed from the wind farm substation to a new substation 7km west of Blyth via 28km of new 275kV overhead transmission line. At the Blyth West substation the electricity will be injected into the ElectraNet Para to Bungama 275kV transmission line.

The first 12 months of the project will be focused on civil and electrical activities with the construction of roads, hardstands, foundations and the installation of electrical and communications networks. The turbine erection and commissioning period will follow for an estimated period of 12 months. Commissioning will overlap with the erection period with the first power expected to be exported in October 2013. Commissioning will continue through to October 2014. The project has an estimated completion date of December 2014.
