In New Zealand, we own and operate 34 generation sites. Thirty three are sustainable and generate over 99% of our electricity production from hydroelectric schemes and wind farms. In Australia, we are now generating from the second stage of our Snowtown wind farm. See here for more about our generation portfolio.
In addition, in New Zealand and Australia, we have a number of generation projects in various stages of planning and development. In New Zealand, linked to our hydroelectric assets, we also have a number of irrigation projects in planning, development and operation. See here for more about our irrigation portfolio.
Our retail proposition is based on excellent customer service and continual innovation. In 2013, we had over 200,000 electricity customers. We had over 27,500 telecommunications customers, 16,000 of them with us for their broadband service. Our customers represent homes and businesses nationwide. Recently, we have broadened our offering to include reticulated and bottled gas and ultra fast broadband over fibre.
Following the Government’s 1993 restructuring of the New Zealand electricity sector, Trustpower Limited was formed and we began developing our generation and retailing business. In 1999, further market reforms required us to choose between generation/retailing and owning a distribution network. The decision was made to focus on generation/retailing and exit distribution.
